Playing with the Essentials

Jim Nind & Lisa Berry

April 6th -12th

Open evening

Saturday 8th

6-8pm

What can people expect from this exhibition at 142?

To see ardent work in progress drawing upon the essential qualities of colour and the eclecticism implicit in mixed media painting. An opportunity to witness two artists working in intense collaboration, the joys, trials and tribulations inherent in interactive practice and an exhibition of work growing out of fervent creative engagement.

Lisa and Jim will show nothing on the gallery walls at the start of the week. The exhibition itself will grow out of the shared working process, the media and materials at hand and a collection of previously “failed” paintings. The exhibition will be characterised by immediacy and risk-taking, colour-play and spontaneous responses.

The collaborative endeavour between Jim and Lisa is now entering its fourth year. Given the challenging and complex nature of close creative collaboration between two strong characters and individualistic practitioners those four years represent a real achievement. Alongside some impressive and surprising paintings the partnership has invited the participation of other artists and the direct feedback and commentary of a range of gallery visitors, some of whom have become regulars who might be described as “followers”. The journey has been replete with dialogue and reflection, the odd cul-de-sac, challenged assumptions, and some powerful periods of learning.

The body of work emerging from the collaboration has been very varied, sometimes poignantly figurative, often abstract, and frequently emphasising formal qualities over “content”. Jim and Lisa enjoy discussing their work with gallery visitors but try to avoid simplistic explanations of what is going on.
