A Bit About Caroline Lummis Corkhill

Caroline is a local artist and here she is to tell us a bit about herself…

I am a local artist and sculptor, having been brought up by (and inspired by) the sea my entire life. I attended Fairfield infants back in 1970 and then went on to Deben High School with many happy memories... Later, I trained at art school, university and began work as an art teacher in Suffolk which I did for over 15 years.

Coming from a creative family inspired experiments with textiles, wood and papier-mache at the dining room table whilst my seafaring brothers made klinker boats in the garden! Ours was a house with fresh fish ready to prepare in the sink, a piano being played in the dining room (my mother played every day) and lots of lively stories about tides, fishing and local events.

These days, I am immersed back in a world of art. One of my continuing great loves is the creation of hand printed wall paper from my own carved wooden blocks and lino cuts but I return on a regular basis to sculpture which is my main passion.

I gained some notoriety from the chicken wire angels with my friend, Tracy Barritt Brown, for the Felixstowe bid at Christmas.

However, my large scale sculptures, (Jackalope 2022, Field 17 Sculpture Trail 2018), have recently taken a back seat as I've fallen in love with tiny papier-mache sculptures of garden birds.
Being close to nature, swimming and growing my own food has inspired a reappreciation of birds and the natural environment. Who doesn't love the black bird and their beautiful song or the multicoloured murmuration of the starling's flight path? My little sculptures an homage to them.

I currently have small acrylics for sale at Applaud Cafe in St Peter's Street, Ipswich and I will be offering papier-mache workshops.

In May, much of my Interior Design will be displayed at 142 Gallery in Felixstowe from 3rd to 10th.

Cards for sale in Still Water Books, garden sculptures at Helmingham Hall, May 28th and 29th or catch me at Art on the Beach.
