New Gainsborough Exhibition Opens at Landguard Fort, Exploring Art, History & Georgian Scandal

Landguard Fort is proud to unveil its latest attraction: a compelling new exhibition dedicated to an early landscape work of celebrated Suffolk-born artist Thomas Gainsborough – focussing on his rarely seen painting of Landguard Fort itself.

The exhibition explores the deep and complex friendship between Gainsborough and Lieutenant-Governor Phillip Thicknesse, who presided over the Fort from 1753 to 1766. This fascinating relationship is revealed through original writings, portraits, and family stories—many drawn from Thicknesse’s own memoir of Gainsborough, A Sketch of the Life and Paintings of Thomas Gainsborough, Esq.

The painting survives thanks to Thomas Major, chief seal engraver to the king, who created an engraving of the painting. Gainsborough’s original was lost during Thicknesse’s life to damp conditions at the Fort
While Gainsborough is best known for his elegant portraits, he confessed his true passion was for landscapes, once writing:
“I’m sick of Portraits and wish very much to take my Viol da Gamba and walk off to some sweet Village where I can paint Landskips.”
Among the exhibition highlights:
  • A high-quality reproduction of Gainsborough’s early painting of Landguard Fort
  • Portraits and sketches created for Ann Ford, Thicknesse’s wife, and a touching gift for their daughter
  • Original text excerpts from Thicknesse offering insight into the salacious scandal that nearly ended his friendship with Gainsborough
The exhibition is supported by Gainsborough’s House in Sudbury and the Cincinnati Art Museum, both of whom have generously contributed high-resolution images of Gainsborough’s works.

Also launching this summer is the Fort’s new interactive dress-up area, where visitors of all ages can try on military uniforms, tin hats, and prop rifles. Complete with mirror it is perfect for photo opportunities and offers a hands-on, family-friendly experience of history.

Elian Shipp, General Manager at Landguard Fort, said:
“Both new exhibitions offer something new and exciting for our visitors. We hope to attract newcomers and inspire returning guests to see the Fort in a new light.

It’s been incredibly rewarding to bring these ideas to life alongside our brilliant volunteer team.”
