Felixstowe Volunteer Helping Landguard Fort Last Hundreds of Years to Come

Here’s Steve Wynn who tells us what he gets out of volunteering in the maintenance team at Landguard Fort, and how much such activity helps to preserve this historic landmark in Felixstowe.

In a nutshell it’s about people and teamwork, doing something positive and worthwhile and, not least, acquiring new skills and boosting my self-confidence.

I originally joined because I wanted something that would motivate me to get out of the house, meet new people and contribute something of value. But I discovered so much more – and the more I put in, the more I got out of it. The amount of time I put in varies depending on what needs to be done and the time of year, and I have personal choice over that so I can fit it in with other things in my life.

There are ten people in the maintenance team with a variety of skills they’ve either brought with them or developed over time at the fort, for example, I joined as a painter and I still enjoy doing that, but I’ve also learned carpentry skills using hand tools and powered workshop machinery.

The people across the different teams; history specialists, tour guides, marketing, IT and systems, tea room, shop and ticket office volunteers – all have such different personalities and backgrounds. Such unique individuality is an asset to the team, but there is one thing we all share... a love for the fort and having fun together.

The work can be incredibly varied, but the main aim is to ensure the fabric of the building is maintained, looks spick and span and is safe for our visitors and volunteers. I might be painting, making up stands for interpretation displays and information panels, weeding, and cleaning the rooms and tunnels. While doing those things I keep an eye out for any damage or things needing repair and report back to the team. And when we are open to the public and during special events, I might find myself lending a hand marshalling or taking refreshments to other volunteers, or even standing in for a bit if they need a comfort break.

The fort has really become part of my life and love my work their so much – some days it’s vibrant with activity and on other days it’s quite peacful and tranquil. It has a very special atmosphere and although it’s a military installation, it doesn’t feel in the least bit threatening or intimidating. It might sound soppy, but I love the fort and I like to think it loves me, too!

It’s thoroughly rewarding being able to make a contribution, and to receive praise and encouragement from our lovely general manager and her assistant. Everything I’ve experienced at the fort has boosted my self-confidence and self-esteem. How many jobs can you say that about? OK, it doesn’t pay a wage, but you just can’t put monetary value on the rewards and benefits of volunteering there.

I look forward to seeing you again soon at Landguard Fort.

All the best,

Steve Wynn
