Following the planting of six trees to mark HM The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012, the Old Felixstowe Community Association (OFCA) will be planting a further three trees to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee. Two of the trees, a Dog Rose and a Rowan tree, are courtesy of the Felixstowe Town Council’s contribution to the Queen’s Canopy, and the third which has been sponsored by the Old Felixstowe Garden Club will be a community apple tree which, when it has matured, will provide fruit for the local community.
The Association will also be installing a bench facing on to Gosford Green beside the Centre to provide seating for those using the Green for leisure. The planting of the tree and unveiling of the bench by the Mayor of Felixstowe will take place on the 4th June at 11.00 am between the Centre and Gosford Green.
In addition to this, there will be an exhibition of Royal Memorabilia and photographs of the Royal Family’s involvement in life around Felixstowe over the past years. Local residents and members of the association have lent memorabilia, books, photos and newspapers going back nearly 100 years together with photos taken at the Diamond Jubilee event in 2012. The exhibition will be on from just after 11.00 on Saturday 4th June and from 10.00 on Sunday 5th June. Both days the exhibition will close at 1.00 and there will be refreshments available in the Coffee Lounge.
One of the most exciting points of the two-day celebration will be the showing of a music contribution from students of Kingsfleet Primary School which will be on our big screen in the Wyn Brackley Hall at the Centre. It will be shown twice on the Saturday and again twice on the Sunday. The school have also made a contribution to our Jubilee collection of painted stones together with the residents of the Margery Girling retirement home.
Chairman Celia Page said, “The local community are very involved in this event, children from Kingsfleet Primary School and the residents of Margery Girling House retirement home were very involved in our Diamond Jubilee event and they are painting stones for us which will be on display for the event and returned to the school and the Home afterwards and the school have also put together this amazing music video. Most of the groups that meet regularly at OFCA are also painting stones and it is hoped to use the stones in a permanent memorial to the Jubilee in our garden at the Centre. A Royal Platinum Jubilee is a rare event that few of us will ever see again in our lifetimes and it seemed fitting to once again mark the Queen’s Jubilee in this way.”
