Save Zante Strays

You may be aware of this wonderful charity, Save Zante Strays. They are hosting a charitable dog walk to raise money to help give stray dogs a home ❤️ Here is Sue to tell you more…

On Saturday 8th October at 11am, come and join a dog walk from Cliff Road car park to Felixstowe Ferry and return, where there will be refreshments and home cooked goodies at Joan’s beach hut at The Dip. The walk is to raise some much needed funds for Zante Strays, an organisation set up in 2013 by a few volunteers on the Greek island of Zakynthos (Zante) who wanted to help try to tackle the stray animal problem there.

The shelter doesn’t receive any form of help from the Greek municipality and it was left to a small group of unpaid volunteers to start rescuing and fostering abandoned, abused and neglected dogs which, to date, has rescued over 3000 animals and found them their forever homes in the UK, Germany and Holland.

Zante Strays Trustee, Sue Ban said, “Every day dogs are being abandoned on the side of the road, run over and left to die, newborn puppies taken from their mother and dumped in a bin and worse. With no funded or licensed alternative, it is left to Zante Strays and the few other animal rescue organisations on the island to help unwanted and traumatised animals to get them to safety before finding them a loving forever home. Zante Strays shelter has grown gradually and is now caring for over 120 dogs with many more in private foster homes around the island.”

COVID and the continuing effect of Brexit have hit hard in the last three years, significantly increasing costs and reducing access to donations from holidaymakers who visit the shelter. Any monies raised from donations for post walk refreshments will be used towards care and adoption costs.

Felixstowe Supporters of Zante Strays Facebook group has over 120 members and is growing steadily. Many members are already proud owners of one or more Zante Strays and continue to support and fundraise for the shelter. The event is open to all dog and non-dog owners.

Zante Strays is a UK registered charity, charity number 1166760.
