An Update from Local Karting Champion, Euan Stephenson

They're back from an amazing weekend in Wales racing at GYG! Here's Alex, Euan's father, with an update of their race report.

On Friday 22nd March, The Kart Championship visited GYG Glan Y Glos, an amazing track in the heart of North Wales. Euan was again racing Junior Rotax Category racing 51, with his distinctive Green Helmet.

As you would imagine visiting Wales the weather never disappointed, we had every season in three days’ worth of racing. This included snow! The Friday Testing was hit and miss with weather and kart set up hard to tune in as it would rain so hard and then be hot. The Saturday was cold and wet and that made racing easier as the kart could be set up. The Sunday was crystal clear skies and sunshine.

Saturday Qualifier was very difficult due to severe weather and the conditions constantly changing, Euan managed to Qualify P9 in the first timed qualifier of the day but after a very wet track Euan finished P10. It was a difficult race. Saturday’s racing continued with Heat 1, Euan gridded P10, with conditions working in our favour Euan raced hard and ended the race P7. Heat 2, Euan again gridded P10 the field was much tighter this round and he had to battle hard to end P9. So, Saturday was a success with two top ten finishes P7 and P9. Euan walked away with 32 championship points out of a possible 40, so great progression.

Sunday rolled on and the weather improved, and the track started to dry out. We didn’t get an opportunity to test or warm up Sunday as we couldn’t race till 10am, so the first time on track was for the Super Heat 1. Euan gridded P7 and as the race progressed Euan took some brave moves and ended up finishing P3. Sadly, the brave decision backfired and with a visit to the stewards we were dropped to P6, as we received a 5sec penalty for gaining an unfair advantage and another 5 sec penalty for incorrect position front-fairing. We moved on and took the win.

Super Heat 2 was going to be make or break for us, so as the race got going Euan took a massive risk and it would of meant a top 3 finish, but instead, Euan got caught short and ended up in the grass, which meant he dropped to P15. He had 5 laps to make progress and he took some opportunities and finished P12, but Euan showed some amazing driving.

As the final rolled around, we had mixed feelings, but Euan felt he could achieve more. He gridded P12 on a very busy grid, he managed a few moves but ultimately ended the race in P12. The weekend was a massive step forward again for us as a team and Euan as a driver. We hadn’t ever been to GYG but learn so much and we are so excited for what’s next. We look forward to seeing how many championships points we received and where this leaves us in the standings.

Thank you for reading and watch out for Euan's next update!
